S.C. - We can identify the similes which use 'as' We can identify the similes which use 'like' We can identify metaphors We can explain what the similes and metaphors mean/are telling us about what we are reading
Metaphors are a way to compare to by saying that one thing is another thing. For example, we say somebody is a fool. In
the past in Europe, a fool was a person who entertained the king or queen by doing silly things. The fool was a kind of clown. He often did crazy or stupid things to make people laugh. So when we call somebody a fool we really mean that he or she is doing something silly or stupid. We don’t really mean that they are somebody who entertains the king or queen. We are using a metaphor.
What do we mean when we say these things:
When we say someone is a pig we really mean that_That they are fat
When we call someone an angel we really mean that goody good
If we say someone is a giant we really mean that they are tall
When we call a man an ogre or a woman a witch we really mean ugly
When somebody plays cards and we call them a shark, we really mean that They are sneeky or tricky
If we say that somebody is a volcano ready to explode, we really mean that full and had to much food
When we say somebody is bright we mean that They are smart
Metaphors are imaginative ways to describe something by comparing that thing to something else. For example, if I wanted to say that Dan is tall, I could
say that Dan is a giant. Use a metaphor to describe somebody who is:
tall Levi is a giraffe
kind Hamish is nice
fast Korban is fast
slow I am slow
smart Braydon is a smarty
fat a pig is fat!!!!!!!!!!!!
sneaky ruben is sneaky
angry Seth is angry
beautiful Alex is
ugly Peacocks are hidious
stubborn My Sister is stubben
short Dav is small
thin luke is anarexic
silly Korban
scared easily Josh
Similes are a way to compare two things using ‘like’ or ‘as’. For example, if I want to say that somebody swims well, I can say they swim like a fish because fish swim well. There are two basic patterns that you can use.
verb + like + noun
She swims like a fish.
He looks like an ogre.
She plays like a pro.
He walks like a duck.
She acts like a fool.
as + adjective + as + noun
He is as tall as a giant.
She is as fast as a rocket.
He is as graceful as a swan.
She is as sneaky as a fox.
He is as quiet as a mouse.
How could I say that somebody:
runs fast
is pretty
jumps well
is strong
How could I say that something:
is hard
feels soft
is sweet
feels rough
is heavy
sounds noisy
is light
How could I say that somebody:
runs fast

jumps well
is strong
How could I say that something:

is sweet feels rough
is heavy
sounds noisy

It was a boring afternoon for Sam and Corban couldn’t think of anything to do.This needs to be more exciting and really catch my attention! They thought about going to the the ancient tree hut in the old rimu tree. Capital letter for a name They went up the old rotten ladder and saw something mysterious a book with a golden map on it. They walked over carefully not knowing what was going to happen next,
Corban being the older brother he picked up the book the gold number 7 started glowing and he dropped the book fell and it opened to a page with all this strange righting. Suddenly Corban and Sam felt like they were being sucked into the book and then they were gone.
Yelling and screaming they splatted into the middle of nowhere. The dirt was puffing up from them falling. Coughing Sam and Corban were looking at a little dot and it looked like it was coming towards them. They hid behind a old boulder. the object came closer it appeared to be people in an old truck carrying all these kid like they had been kidnapped and were trying to escape. Then about 500 metres away from them they saw something glowing. They waited until the vehicle was out of sight and then it was time to go and check out the treasure. Then Sam said that this looked like the treasure in the book they had read when they were younger and they reward was $100,000 for getting it back to earth. All they had to do was shine it at the sun and they would return. It was a cloudy day so they were not going to escape today. but suddenly they noticed another truck, the same truck, they were coming back to get them they were horrified. they quckliy hid staunchly behind old cactus. Then they both got grabbed behind the their necks and they leaded over to the truck. Sam woke up unsure on were he was minutes later Corban woke up and thought the same as Sam. They needed to get out. far out over the horizon Sam saw the the sun rising today was the day they had to escape from them other wise they would be trapped forever.Sam being The brainiac soon enough had figured out how to escape and they were off. Running after them were the strange kidnappers they weren’t going to look back because one small mistake and this could be their home for the rest of their life.
